“The Track Guy” (Mike Jay) - Race Day Announcer
No way could he have envisioned it in 1975 while attending his first Drake Relays, but in 2003 Mike attended his 28th consecutive Drake Relays, but this time from the press box. In 2005 Mike Jay became the lead announcer for the coed IAHSSA/IGHSAU state meets – becoming the esteemed Voice of the Drake Relays in 2006. Throughout his announcing career Mike has called numerous races at all levels of competition (NCAA Division I Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field Championships, several NCAA Division I Regional Cross Country meets). The hard work and dedication that Mike pours into his PA announcing was recognized in 2014 when he was honored as the Nation’s Top Track and Field Announcer by Track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA).
Erik Sowinski - Dignitary
Erik Sowinski attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a degree in Integrative Physiology in 2012. While competing for the Hawkeyes, the five-time All-American set University records in the 600 and 800 meters, en route to the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship and runner-up honors at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Since graduating from Iowa, Erik has quietly become one of the USA's hottest middle distance runners. He is a two-time USA Indoor 800 meter Champion (2013 and 2014), former American record holder in the 600 meters, and ran the final leg of the World Record setting 4x800m relay. Erik made his first US Team in 2014, earning a trip to Sopot, Poland for the World Indoor Championships and followed it up with a trip to the 2015 World Outdoor Championships in Beijing. At the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland, Erik brought home the hardware, earning a bronze medal in the 800 meters.
When not training, competing, and setting records, Erik balances his schedule with part-time employment for Running Wild, an athletic apparel store in Iowa City. Erik's hard work and dedication has consistently been at the heart of his success, starting virtually from the bottom and striving through small steps to his current standing. In his down-time, Erik enjoys reading, fantasy sports, and playing video games.
Melissa Mikos - Yoga Instructor
Melissa is in her final semester at UI before she will begin student teaching elementary school in the fall. She completed her 200 hr RYT training through Hothouse Yoga and currently teaches the community class at Hothouse Yoga on Tuesday nights.
“Hothouse Yoga has been my saving grace and home here in Iowa City for the past 5 years. I feel so grateful and fortunate for the abundant life that yoga has given me. Having always struggled with anxiety; yoga has been my anchor and helped reveal to me the mental and physical health benefits that come with showing up for your life, right here and now.” -Melissa :)
RiverRun is excited to have Melissa lead some post race drop in yoga on the IMU amphitheater. Yoga will start at 9:30am and finish at the end of the event. Mats will not be provided so feel free to bring one with you on race day.
